💛 The lesson

Being brave does not mean you are never frightened. It means looking anyway, just once, especially when someone who loves you is holding on to you.

🔎 Fun fact

The pink and golden glow that lights up snowy mountain tops just after sunset has a name: alpenglow. It happens when low sunlight bounces off the snow.

About this story (for grown-ups)

Kiara rolls two golden dice and lands on Mountain Resort. Frost races across the board, the playroom turns white, and Kiara, Blossom the unicorn and Pip the little lamb find themselves on a wooden platform high in the Swiss Alps, where an old varnished gondola called the Timber Trail is waiting.

Up they go, over pine forests, meadows full of cowbells and a village that shrinks to the size of a thimble. Then, high in the clouds, the gondola stops and sways, and Pip, who has been so brave, hides his face in Kiara's dress. Kiara does not laugh. She hugs him, Blossom's horn glows like a little lamp, and Kiara whispers, "Look. Just once."

Pip peeks and sees the whole mountain range glowing gold at sunset, with a rainbow in the mist. At the top he rings the old brass bell himself, and on the way down it is Pip who leads the way. A soothing story for children who sometimes feel scared.

0:00 Kiara: Ooh, my turn! Are you ready?

0:02 Blossom: Roll them, roll them!

0:05 Kiara cupped the two golden dice in her hands, gave them a shake, and let them go.

0:11 They skittered across the board and stopped on a square with a little red cable car painted on it.

0:16 Kiara: Mountain Resort!

0:18 And the square began to freeze.

0:21 Frost went racing out across the whole board, crackling as it went, and tiny snowflakes came spinning up into the warm playroom air.

0:30 The carpet went white. The lamplight went blue. And the cold, clean smell of snow came in from somewhere very far away.

0:40 Kiara: Look! A real cable car!

0:43 Pip: Baaa!

0:44 They were standing on a little wooden platform, high in the mountains, with snow on the roof and red flowers in the window boxes.

0:53 A sign above them said Mountain Resort, and beside it hung an old brass bell, polished bright by a hundred years of hands.

1:02 And waiting at the platform, swinging very gently on its cable, was a little varnished wooden gondola called the Timber Trail.

1:10 Kiara: All aboard!

1:13 They climbed in. The door clicked shut. And with a soft tug, the mountain began to pull them upward.

1:22 Kiara: We are going up! Wave, Pip, wave!

1:26 Blossom: I can see the whole village!

1:28 Up they went, over the dark green pine forests, over meadows full of brown cows with bells around their necks.

1:37 Below them a little town grew smaller and smaller, until the church tower was no bigger than a thimble and the river was a bright blue thread.

1:47 And ahead of them the mountains rose up, white and enormous, higher than anything Kiara had ever seen.

1:54 The higher they climbed, the quieter the world became.

1:57 Pip: Baaa. Baaa.

2:02 Kiara: Oh, Pip. Come here. I have got you.

2:05 Because high in the clouds, with nothing above them and nothing below them, the gondola had stopped.

2:11 It swayed, very gently, the way a cradle sways. And Pip, who had been so brave all the way up, was suddenly very, very frightened.

2:22 He pushed his face into Kiara's dress and would not look at anything at all.

2:27 Kiara did not laugh at him. She knelt down on the wooden floor and put both arms around him.

2:34 Kiara: Do not be scared. I am right here.

2:38 And Blossom lowered her head until her golden horn glowed warm and soft between the two of them, like a little lamp.

2:46 Kiara: Look. Just once.

2:51 Pip: Baa?

2:52 Kiara: There. Do you see it?

2:54 And Pip opened one eye. And then the other one.

2:59 Because the clouds had rolled away beneath them, and the whole of the mountains was on fire with sunset.

3:07 Golden light lay along every snowy peak. A rainbow curved right through the mist.

3:13 And far, far below, the little town had turned its lamps on, one window at a time.

3:19 Blossom: Ohhh.

3:20 Pip: Baaaaa!

3:24 Pip's eyes went as round as two buttons. And somewhere between one breath and the next, he stopped being frightened.

3:32 Not because the mountain had got any smaller. But because he had looked.

3:41 Kiara: Up here! Ring it, Pip. You first!

3:43 At the very top there was an old brass bell on a wooden frame, with snow heaped along its shoulders.

3:51 Pip took the rope in his teeth and pulled.

3:54 And the bell rang out across the whole valley, so loud and so bright that the snow lifted off the branches and hung in the air like sparks.

4:03 Pip: Baa! Baa!

4:05 And on the way back down, it was Pip who went first. Pip who trotted out in front. Pip who led the way.

4:14 Then the golden light grew brighter and brighter, until it filled everything.

4:18 And Kiara was back on the carpet, kneeling at the board, holding the Mountain Resort card in both hands.

4:25 Kiara: Some views are worth the climb.

4:29 And here is the thing that Pip found out that day, high up in the clouds, with his face hidden in a pink dress.

4:37 Being brave does not mean you are never frightened. Everybody is frightened sometimes, and there is nothing wrong with you when you are.

4:44 Being brave means looking anyway. Just once. Especially when somebody who loves you is holding on to you while you do.

4:52 Some views are worth the climb. And some friends are worth holding on to.
