💛 The lesson
With dedication, you can do anything. Go slowly, help each other, and never give up; turning back to try again is not giving up, it is getting ready.
🔎 Fun fact
Seashell fossils are found high on Mount Everest: its rock was once the floor of the Tethys Sea, pushed up into the sky when India crashed into Asia.
About this story (for grown-ups)
Kiara rolls her magic dice, it lands on a snowy mountain square, and a swirl of snow carries her, Pip, Mango, Blossom and Rivet all the way to Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth at 8,849 metres.
By a turquoise lake Pip finds a seashell fossil, and the friends learn how an ancient sea floor was folded up into the sky. They meet Dawa, a Sherpa guide, hear how Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary first reached the top together in 1953, and go "bistarai, bistarai" (slowly, slowly) because the air is so thin. On a ladder over the Khumbu Icefall, Pip helps Kiara across with the words "Look. Just once."
In a storm they meet Isvara, an ice sage who can pause the world, and face the hardest choice: the top, or each other? They choose each other, rest and practise, and later reach the summit together at sunrise. Every fact in the story is real.

Read along: every line of “Kiara Climbs Mount Everest”
0:00 Kiara rolled her magic dice… and it landed on a snowy mountain square! A swirl of snow lifted them right out of the playroom — whoosh!
0:11 The highest mountain in the whole world!
0:15 And there it stood: Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth — eight thousand, eight hundred and forty-nine metres tall. In Nepal they call it Sagarmatha; in Tibet, Chomolungma.
0:30 By a turquoise lake, Pip found a stone curled like a shell.
0:37 A seashell... on a mountain?!
0:41 It was a fossil! Long ago this was the floor of an ocean — the Tethys Sea. Then India, riding a giant plate of rock, pushed into Asia, and folded the seabed up into the sky.
0:56 It's still pushing — and Everest still grows a little every year. Kiara put the fossil gently back where it belonged.
1:09 They met Dawa, a Sherpa guide. Sherpa people have lived in these mountains for hundreds of years.
1:21 In nineteen fifty-three, Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa, and Edmund Hillary became the first to reach the top — together, as a team.
1:31 On the mountain, we look after each other.
1:37 At Base Camp the air felt thin. At the very top there's only about one third of the air we breathe at home, so climbers go slowly. Pip puffed. Rivet beeped.
1:53 Oxygen low. Walking slow.
1:57 Bistarai, bistarai! Slowly, slowly!
2:04 In the Khumbu Icefall, climbers cross deep cracks in the ice on ladders. Kiara stepped onto one… and froze.
2:13 And little Pip — who was once afraid of heights himself — said softly:
2:19 Look. Just once.
2:22 Look... just once.
2:26 She looked up, not down — and walked across.
2:32 Then the wind began to howl. Snow flew sideways, and the prayer flags snapped and cracked.
2:40 Mango flapped ahead to find shelter… and saw a soft blue light glowing deep inside the ice.
2:50 Over here! Over here!
2:54 Inside stood a tall, shining lady, with snowflakes hanging perfectly still above her head.
3:03 An Ice Queen!
3:06 She smiled.
3:11 Not a queen. A sage. I am Isvara.
3:15 Who are you?
3:18 Someone who gives you a moment, when you need one most.
3:24 A rumble — and a wall of snow came thundering down! Isvara raised one open hand, and the whole world stopped. Every snowflake. Every rock. All hanging in the air.
3:38 My pause lasts only while I stand still. Go — together.
3:44 So they walked through a frozen world. Blossom's horn lit the way, Rivet found the safe ridge, and Mango called the turns.
3:55 Hold paws! Everyone together!
3:59 Nobody rushed. Nobody was left behind.
4:06 On the ridge, Isvara breathed on the air, and it became a mirror of ice. It showed the summit, lost in a roaring storm.
4:17 The top… or each other?
4:20 Kiara looked at her tired, brave friends.
4:24 We'll turn back, and come back stronger!
4:28 Turning back isn't giving up. It's getting ready.
4:35 They rested. They practised every day. They waited for the storm to pass. And when the sky was clear, they climbed again — slowly, together — until, at sunrise, they stood on top of the world!
4:53 We did it! Together!
4:55 They tied a prayer flag for the wind, and carried home every scrap they'd brought.
5:04 Back at the board, Kiara held the Everest card… and a tiny snowflake that would never melt.
5:14 With dedication, you can do anything!
5:18 And that's the moral of the story: if you have dedication — if you go slowly, help each other, and never give up — you can do anything in the world.
